Desk note - Oct 14: chips and bank results weigh

US stocks eased amid chip weakness and mixed bank earnings; crude diverged, gold slipped, and major FX and crypto pairs rose on October 13.

Mixed bank earnings and renewed semiconductor weakness were the clearest pressure points in the October 13 US equity session. The major indices finished a little lower, but the rest of the cross-asset picture did not line up as a simple flight from risk: WTI and major crypto pairs rose, while Brent and gold slipped. CNBC's closing report and Reuters' account, carried by The Business Times both described chip weakness and mixed bank results.

Indices

The S&P 500 closed at 7,805.45, down 0.02%; the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.15% to 27,204.38, and the Dow fell 0.35% to 51,670.10. CNBC and Reuters' separately reported closing accounts agree on those levels and moves. Reuters described chipmakers extending recent losses as investors weighed mixed bank reports. That gives the day's modest decline a clear equity-market context, though it does not explain every asset's move. CNBC · Reuters via The Business Times

Forex

EUR/USD and GBP/USD both rose over the named 00:00–24:00 UTC window, not a universal FX close. EUR/USD moved from 1.11579 to 1.11995 on Kraken (+0.37%); Bitstamp recorded 1.11575 to 1.11981 (+0.36%). GBP/USD advanced from 1.32071 to 1.32553 on Kraken (+0.37%), while Bitstamp showed 1.32092 to 1.32518 (+0.32%). The direction matched across venues, with small differences in prices and calculated change. Kraken EUR/USD · Bitstamp EUR/USD · Kraken GBP/USD · Bitstamp GBP/USD

Crypto

Bitcoin and ether also advanced over the same UTC day, unlike a simple risk-off reading of the slightly lower US indices. BTC/USD rose 1.65–1.67% across Coinbase and Kraken; ETH/USD gained 2.08–2.13% on those venues. These are exchange candles, not a New York close, and their shared direction does not establish a common catalyst with equities. Coinbase BTC/USD · Kraken BTC/USD · Coinbase ETH/USD · Kraken ETH/USD

What it means for a systematic book

A narrow equity setback alongside mixed oil and gains in both crypto pairs is a reminder that a day's label can hide different exposures. A systematic book is easier to assess when each instrument's session, venue and contract are explicit; otherwise two figures called “the close” may describe different windows. The lesson is not that one market confirmed another, but that diversification only means something when observations are comparable.
