Desk note - Oct 21: earnings lift the Dow, not tech

The Dow led after earnings optimism; a flat Nasdaq and mixed assets kept the October 20 close from reading as a broad risk-on session.

Earnings optimism helped lift the Dow and most U.S. shares on October 20, but the Nasdaq Composite finished nearly unchanged. That split matters: the session was positive for much of the equity market without producing a clean, cross-asset risk-on signal. CNBC and the Associated Press both described strong company results as support for shares (CNBC; AP via Local10).

Indices: a Dow-led advance

The Dow closed at 52,495.88, up 1.02%; the S&P 500 added 0.28% to 7,712.57. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.02% to 26,424.82. Yahoo Finance's dated daily bars and CNBC's closing quotes agree on the three official cash closes (Yahoo Dow, CNBC Dow; Yahoo S&P 500, CNBC S&P 500; Yahoo Nasdaq, CNBC Nasdaq). CNBC highlighted strong reports from 3M and Northrop Grumman; AP also described broad support from corporate earnings. The index pattern, especially the Nasdaq's flat finish, argues against treating the day's headline as a uniform technology rally.

Commodities: both benchmarks eased

December Brent crude (LCOZ6) settled at $108.79, down 0.69% on the New York session. The Yahoo daily reference series supplies the move and CNBC's settlement quote confirms the contract level (Yahoo Brent; CNBC Brent settlement). December COMEX gold (GCZ6) settled at $4,142.60, down 0.42%; the same two-source comparison supports its level and move (Yahoo gold; CNBC gold settlement). These settlements show two declines, not a common explanation: the closing accounts do not establish a specific cause for gold's move. The crude observation is for December Brent; contract choice matters when comparing oil quotes.

Forex and crypto: UTC windows, not exchange closes

EUR/USD gained about 0.13% and GBP/USD about 0.45% from 00:00 UTC October 20 to 00:00 UTC October 21. Kraken and Bitstamp daily candles agree on both pair directions (Kraken EUR/USD, Bitstamp EUR/USD; Kraken GBP/USD, Bitstamp GBP/USD). These are full UTC-day comparisons, not New York closing rates. The dated equity reports do not supply a verified currency catalyst, so the measured move is more useful than an unsupported dollar story.

Over the same UTC window, Bitcoin rose about 1.34% and Ether about 1.72%. Coinbase Exchange and Kraken candles agree on the positive direction and approximate size (Coinbase BTC, Kraken BTC; Coinbase ETH, Kraken ETH). The overlap with firmer equities is a one-session observation, not evidence of a stable correlation or a crypto-specific catalyst.

What the session says about a systematic book

A strong Dow, a nearly flat Nasdaq, lower Brent and gold, and gains in major FX and crypto pairs do not fit neatly into one risk label. For a systematic book, that is a reminder to preserve each instrument's session boundary and contract before comparing returns. A daily narrative should explain the common driver where evidence supports one, and leave unrelated moves as separate observations rather than force them into a single story.
