Desk note - Oct 22: SpaceX earnings pull US stocks higher

The October 21 US session advanced on tech earnings, while oil contracts diverged and modest gains spread across FX and crypto.

The October 21 US close had a clear headline driver: strong corporate earnings, with SpaceX drawing investors back toward technology shares. The S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite and Dow all finished higher, according to CNBC's closing report and the Associated Press account. The broader tape was less uniform: crude benchmarks split, while gold, major currency pairs and the two largest cryptoassets posted small gains.

Indices

The S&P 500 closed at 7,757.17, up 0.58%; the Nasdaq Composite ended at 26,702.86, up 1.05%; and the Dow finished at 52,856.09, up 0.69%. The levels and daily moves align across the Yahoo daily index records, CNBC's S&P quote, Yahoo's Nasdaq record, CNBC's Nasdaq quote, Yahoo's Dow record and CNBC's Dow quote. The Nasdaq led, consistent with the technology focus in both closing accounts. CNBC described a rally in technology shares after SpaceX reported revenue growth and discussed a possible combination with Tesla; AP also highlighted SpaceX's strong profit report. That makes earnings the clearest shared headline, not proof that one company's news explains every index point.

Commodities

Oil did not follow the equity direction. December Brent settled at $108.82 a barrel, up $0.03 (0.03%), while December WTI settled at $97.15, down $0.67 (0.68%). The Xinhua report carried by The Star identifies both December contracts and their ICE/NYMEX settlements; a separate Reuters report carried by Nation Thailand confirms the same October 21 close. For gold, the December COMEX contract (GCZ26) settled at $4,150.00, up about 0.18% on the session; the Yahoo futures series gives the move and CNBC's futures quote matches the settlement. Oil's split close and gold's small advance did not mirror the stronger US equity finish; the session therefore was not a single, uniform risk-on move.

Forex

EUR/USD rose about 0.08% and GBP/USD about 0.16% between 00:00 UTC on October 21 and 00:00 UTC on October 22. The comparison uses matching daily windows: Kraken's EUR/USD candles and Bitstamp's EUR/USD candles, alongside Kraken's GBP/USD candles and Bitstamp's GBP/USD candles. These are UTC day changes from exchange candles, not a New York close. The gains were modest, and the evidence here establishes direction and scale rather than a specific currency catalyst.

Crypto

Bitcoin rose about 1.31% and Ether about 1.03% over the same 24-hour UTC window. Coinbase's BTC/USD candles agree with Kraken's XBT/USD record; for Ether, compare Coinbase ETH/USD with Kraken ETH/USD. The two assets moved in the same direction, but their gains were not evidence of a direct response to the SpaceX headlines; the source set verifies the price behaviour, not that causal link.

What it means for a systematic book

The session combined a technology-led equity advance with a split oil close and measured gains in FX and crypto. That mix is a reminder that a headline can dominate one part of the tape without synchronising every market. A rules-based process should record the instrument, contract and observation window before comparing returns; a UTC crypto candle, a New York futures settlement and a US cash-index close are different measurements. Regime labels are most useful when they describe what the data showed, rather than smoothing cross-asset disagreement into one story.
