Desk note - Nov 4: a tech-led bounce, not broad risk-on

The Nov 3 session lifted US technology shares while the Dow, oil and gold fell; the cross-asset picture stayed mixed.

Tuesday, Nov 3 was a selective technology rebound rather than a broad advance across risk assets. The CNBC closing account and AP report carried by Local10 both described chip and Big Tech leadership while the Dow slipped. The other asset groups did not move in lockstep.

Indices: a split close

The S&P 500 closed at 7,568.92, up 0.365%; the Nasdaq Composite ended at 25,372.01, up 0.825%; and the Dow finished at 51,786.72, down 0.379%. Yahoo daily bars and CNBC closing quotes agree on the cash closes (S&P 500, CNBC; Nasdaq, CNBC; Dow, CNBC). The technology-heavy gain sat beside a falling Dow. The dated reports support that leadership picture, not a single macro cause for every market. See the Nasdaq 100 market statistics for the instrument's longer-term rhythm.

Commodities: lower settlements

Brent front-month LCOF7 settled at $103.60, down 1.117%; the Yahoo daily series gives the move and CNBC confirms the settlement (Yahoo, CNBC). Gold futures GCZ26 settled at $3,940.40, down 0.736% (Yahoo, CNBC). These are futures settlements, not spot prices. Compare with gold's statistics and Brent's statistics to put the session in context.

Forex: the euro edged higher

EUR/USD gained 0.147% on Kraken and 0.131% on Bitstamp between 00:00 UTC Nov 3 and 00:00 UTC Nov 4 (Kraken, Bitstamp). That matched UTC-day comparison is not a New York close. No independently established catalyst is needed to describe a modest move. The EUR/USD statistics page provides historical context without turning one candle into a trend.

Crypto: positive on a separate clock

Bitcoin rose about 0.86% over the same UTC day: Coinbase recorded +0.864% and Kraken +0.854% (Coinbase, Kraken). Ethereum also gained about 0.98%; Coinbase logged +0.979% and Kraken +0.978% over that window (Coinbase ETH, Kraken ETH). Crypto's rise alongside softer gold and oil and a mixed equity close does not make a uniform risk-on signal. See Bitcoin market statistics for its own historical rhythm.

What it means for a systematic book

The headline index gain concealed concentration: technology lifted the Nasdaq while the Dow and two commodity settlements fell. EUR/USD and Bitcoin advanced on their own 24-hour UTC windows, not the New York cash clock. A systematic review keeps instrument, venue and session attached to each observation; that makes comparisons testable rather than rhetorical. One session describes a snapshot, not a durable edge.
